I was sitting outside on a patio at a nearby cafe one nice summer day. A man was sitting at a table next to me with his dog who was on a leash. The pooch was sniffing around and the man gave him a dirty look. The man then yanked up on the leash and yelled "sit!". His dog did not respond, so the man yanked up on the leash even harder, almost hanging his dog while yelling "sit!" again. Still, the poor little guy did not respond.

I gently, let the man know I was a dog trainer and offered to help. He grumbled "sure". I went over to his dog and let him sniff my hand for a moment and then gave him a treat from my treat bag that is always attached to my belt. Then I took a moment to scratch his ears for him. We were then, fast friends. I took another treat, touched the pooch's nose with it and luring his nose upwards by raising my hand up above his head at a slight angle towards his tail, I said "sit". The boy's head went up as his butt went down and he sat. I exclaimed, "good boy!" and gave him the treat. I repeated this a few times until the pup was sitting consistantly. Then I showed the man how to do it while explaining to him that dogs respond better to positive reinforcement than they do to force.
